Creating a More Accessible Future
Family Assistance Program has partnered with High Desert Homeless Services (HDHS) to support the renovation and reopening of the region’s first official homeless shelter.
Funded through a Capital Improvements Award from the County of San Bernardino Office of Homeless Services and the Homeless Housing, Assistance and Prevention (HHAP) Program, the project includes a new roof, six HVAC units, parking lot resurfacing, exterior repairs and painting, and the construction of a secure trash enclosure.
These improvements will enhance the shelter’s safety, comfort, and ADA accessibility as it prepares to provide temporary and long-term housing for seniors in need. In addition, HDHS has received a new round of HHAP funding to help support shelter operations, including bed nights, utilities, and meals for residents.
Together, these investments are helping restore a vital community resource and expand access to safe, stable housing for older adults experiencing homelessness.

The Gift of a Parent’s Voice
Next Step Reentry Program is proud to partner with the Victorville Federal Correctional Complex (FCC) to launch Read with Me, a new initiative designed to strengthen the connection between incarcerated parents and their children through the joy of reading.
As part of the program, parents record themselves reading a children’s book and write a personalized note to accompany it. Next Step staff then package and mail the book to the child along with access to the recorded reading, allowing them to follow the story while hearing their parent’s voice.
By encouraging literacy and meaningful family engagement, Read with Me helps create lasting memories and supports healthy parent-child relationships despite physical separation.
This program is made possible through the generosity of community members who have donated books, postage, and packaging supplies, helping bring the comfort of a parent’s voice into the homes of children throughout our community. Together, we are helping families stay connected—one story at a time.
If you would like to support this initiative, please contact Shelly at shelly@familyassist.org to learn how you can help.

The Power of Pride
Last month, Family Assistance Program hosted San Bernardino Pride at San Bernardino Valley College, a vibrant celebration of community, connection, and visibility.
The event welcomed more than 40 vendors and over 200 attendees for an afternoon filled with pride, unity, and celebration.
Guests enjoyed an entertaining drag performance by the queens of Out and About Pride while a live DJ kept the atmosphere lively throughout the day.
From engaging conversations with community organizations to moments of music, dancing, and connection, the event highlighted the strength, resilience, and spirit of the LGBTQ+ community.
More than a celebration, Pride serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of visibility, acceptance, and belonging, while honoring the progress that has been made and recognizing the continued commitment to equality, dignity, and inclusion for all.

Outdoor Adventures, Lasting Impact
Family Assistance Program provided local youth with the opportunity to travel to Kernville, California, for an exciting whitewater rafting adventure.
The trip offered participants a chance to challenge themselves, build confidence, and experience the outdoors while creating lasting memories with their peers.
Guided by experienced rafting professionals, the group spent the day navigating the river, cooling off from the July heat, and even taking turns surfing the rapids.
Family Assistance Program extends its sincere appreciation to the dedicated staff, volunteers, and rafting guides whose hard work made this adventure possible.
Through their preparation, encouragement, and commitment to youth development, participants were able to strengthen friendships, step outside their comfort zones, and create unforgettable memories that will last a lifetime.
